Survey Reveals Majority of Travelers/Commuters Take No Precautions to Secure Bags, Yet 35% Have Experienced Theft

Kensington Poll Provides Insights on Travel Bag Security and Where Protection Is Most Needed

Kensington®, a worldwide leader in delivering smart. safe. simple. desktop and mobile computing accessories, today announced the results of a recently conducted  North American survey on travel and travel/commuter bag security. The objective of the survey was to provide insights about the need for travel bag protection and in what types of environments. The full survey report is available at Kensington.com/SafeTravels.

The Kensington survey found that while most travelers – 70 percent of those queried – keep up to $2,500 worth of valuables in their travel or commuter bags, merely four percent consider security to be a critical feature of travel bags, and 75 percent take no safety precautions to secure their bags while en route. A surprising 35 percent of respondents indicated they had experienced bag theft while on a trip.

The survey also found that the top 6 places people feel most vulnerable to bag theft are:

  1. 59% - airports
  2. 30% - cafes/restaurants
  3. 25% - conferences and trade shows
  4. 25% - hotel rooms
  5. 21% - hotel lobbies
  6. 19% - automobiles

“Clearly business travel and commuting are increasingly becoming prime targets for theft of bags and luggage,” said Brian Knauss, Global Product Manager, Kensington. “Although travelers know their travel bags and carry-on cases are vulnerable, there doesn’t appear to be an industry standard for how to keep important items safe when on the go.”

The Kensington survey report on secure travel is available at Kensington.com/SafeTravels.

Kensington will showcase a new set of secure bags at CES Unveiled 2016 in Las Vegas on January 4. For more information contact Denise Nelson, the Ventana Group for Kensington, 925.858.5198 (mobile) or dnelson@theventanagroup.com.
